The inclined elevator Gedimino kalno ( German Gediminas-Berg ) is located in the Lithuanian capital Vilnius . It leads from the Lithuanian National Museum ( Lithuanian Lietuvos nacionalinis muziejus ) to the remains of the Upper Castle with the Gediminas Tower . Due to landslides, it was decommissioned at the end of 2016. It has been in operation again since 2019 after the safety measures on the slope were completed.
History and technical data
The inclined elevator was built in 2003 by ABS Transportbahnen and is 71 meters long. The ascent takes 35 seconds, so that the journey takes about a minute when passengers get on and off. The existing car can accommodate 16 people.
The initiative for the construction came from the Vilnius Palace Administration ( Lithuanian Vilniaus pilių direkcija ). The fare for the ascent and descent was 3 litas in 2014 before the introduction of the euro . Preschoolers, residents of nursing homes and the disabled travel free. In 2019, the fare for an ascent and descent is two euros .
The future of the inclined elevator was sometimes controversial. For example, the director of the Lithuanian National Museum asked for it to be completely shut down and dismantled from Gediminas Hill, as it would disturb the view of the hill.
