Step height

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The step height extends from the crotch to the lower hem of the pant legs.

In the tailoring trade , the correct length of the trouser legs is measured according to the step height . It is often incorrectly referred to as the stride length . This is measured from the inside of the step approach ( pants ) to the bottom leg. On the finished trousers, the crotch height is identical to the length of the inner seam, one of the two seams with which the front and back cuts of a trouser leg are sewn together. In the case of jeans , this measurement is called inseam length .

With a bicycle , the step height is decisive for the choice of the frame size and the setting of the optimal saddle height, but it is measured directly on the person. If you are about shoulder width apart, it is the distance from the floor to the dam . This results in the saddle height: 0.88 × step height = distance from saddle to bottom bracket .

The classic road racing bike with a horizontal top tube is assumed to be driven predominantly on flat (= non-arched) paths, which is why only little "clearance" (distance) is required between the top side of the top tube and the dam (when standing slightly apart).

However, if you want to be able to get off a mountain bike or touring bike without injury, if necessary even if the wheels stand up higher than the surface on which your feet come due to a hump on the floor, then 10 to 20 cm of air is required to be safe, which is often required by a rear "sloping" top tube is achieved. Bikes with a deep step-through naturally have even more air up to the crotch.
