Scrap wood

Schrotholz denotes wood roughly hewn with an ax , as it was used for centuries for the construction of scrap wood churches and scrap wood houses , especially in Silesia and Upper Lusatia . Mostly pines and, more rarely, yew trees were used to produce the tree trunks that were hewn square with a broad ax. Already 3 to 4 years before the planned felling, the bark of the selected trees was removed in a spiral in a section under the tree crown, which led to an increase in the resin content in the tree trunk in the following years. This increased resin content provides natural protection against pest and weathering damage to the wood after it has been built.

In contrast to the original log houses built from round tree trunks, scrap wood buildings have a comparatively flat, seamless surface because of the square beam cross-section.

In 1929 at least 130 scrap wood churches were counted in Upper and Lower Silesia. At the turn of the 20th century, wood was gradually replaced by brick.
