Shear strength

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The shear strength is a material constant that describes the resistance of a material to shearing , i.e. to a separation by forces that try to move two adjacent surfaces lengthways.

The shear strength is determined by the shear modulus , also called the sliding modulus.

The theoretical shear strength must be distinguished from the actually measurable shear strength, which is considerably lower due to disturbances in the crystal structure . This is often equated with the shear strength .
