Rollmann & Mayer shoe factory

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Cologne shoe factory Rollmann & Mayer was founded on January 1st, 1873 by Emil Rollmann together with his business partner David Mayer as a shoe wholesaler . In 1882 the production of shoes was started with 20 employees. The company had been located at Niehlerstraße 94 in Cologne-Nippes since 1894 ; due to the constant growth, a larger new building was necessary just a few years later. In 1911, a modern utility building was built in Nesselrodestrasse 26–30 in Cologne-Niehl with an area of around 10,000 square meters. With the retirement of his partner David Mayer in 1911 for reasons of age and the retirement of Emil Rollmann, his son Hans Rollmann took the reins and ran the prosperous company on his own. In 1921, Hans Rollmann and two partners founded another shoe factory, the Romika company in Gusterath Valley . In 1923, the factory in Cologne-Niehl was the largest local employer with 850 employees; later it had more than 1,000 employees. Since the owner of the shoe factory belonged to the Jewish religion , he was persecuted by the National Socialists . After his expulsion from Germany, the factory was completely shut down and sold by the National Socialists.

On the occasion of the demolition of the ruins, the Kölnische Rundschau reported on January 10, 1976: “The Rollmann & Mayer shoe factory used to be located here. The factory was closed during the Hitler era because the Rollmann family was Jewish. The Neubeck family later opened a wool and knitting yarn company in the building under the name Rhineland wool . When the company was closed due to unprofitability, numerous well-known Cologne industrial and craft companies as well as the post office with two offices moved into the factory. After an eventful history, the building is now obsolete. "
