Laura Ayres

Laura Guilhermina Martins Ayres (born June 1, 1922 in Loulé , † January 16, 1992 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese doctor and virologist .

Life

Ayres graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Lisbon in 1946 with a degree in human medicine . She devoted herself to research in the field of public health, particularly in the field of epidemiology . To do this, she conducted studies on the flu and respiratory diseases. In 1955 she founded the virological laboratory at the Instituto Nacional de Saúde .

For her trachoma studies , which she carried out from 1956, she was awarded the Prémio Ricardo Jorge in 1963 . In 1979/80 she organized the first national serological survey and received the Prémio Ricardo Jorge de Saúde Pública in 1983 .

In the 1980s it played an important role in the first measures in the fight against AIDS . From 1985 she coordinated the working group on AIDS and from 1985 to 1991 she was President of the National Commission for the Fight against AIDS (Comissão Nacional de Luta Contra a Sida) .
