A shoe plate ( engl. Cleat ) is the connector between a bicycle shoe , and a clipless pedal .

In racing bike pedals , the cleats are usually made of high-strength plastic and are mounted under the smooth sole of the shoe, which makes walking difficult. In mountain bike clipless pedals they are usually made of steel or brass manufactured and (at least partially) recessed into the shoe sole, in order to facilitate walking.

There are several click systems on the market that are not compatible with one another, e.g. B .:

  • Shimano ( SPD for mountain and trekking bikes, SPD-SL for racing bikes)
  • TIME
  • Crank Brothers
  • LOOK ( Kéo , Kéo Blade and Delta )
  • Speed play

Cleats from the same system and manufacturer are also sometimes offered with different degrees of freedom of movement: The angle of freedom of movement indicates how far the shoe can be moved in the holder.
