In 1684 a school building was set up in the "Ofenhüsi auf dem Guggisberg". Other sources say that the first Oberthals school was located "in the Zelg".

" Wednesdays, 4.6. A community was held in Oberthal by Hanss Luginbüels Haus bey der Linden because of a school house, at which community most of the Haussvätter from Hüsslibach, Hargarten, Blaasen, Buch, Bumersbach and Möschberg found themselves and recognized that they themselves had a school and want to build and run a school house without Höchstetten. The first school was in the Zelg. "

In 1871 the schoolhouse was built in the Käneltal, where it still stands today. In contrast to today, the schoolhouse in Käneltal at that time still looked like a typical Emmental farmhouse. In 1930 the new preaching hall was inaugurated, which is also located in the school building. After the schoolhouse was extended 23 years later and a parish hall was built, there was the first Oberthal festival in 1976 in favor of the established gymnasium. Before the major renovation in 1983–1985, the school grounds consisted of a lawn and a playground. The second Oberthal Festival followed in 1985. The renovated sermon hall and the structurally expanded school complex (converted schoolhouse, new multi-purpose facility / gym and other rooms) were celebrated. In the summer of 1986, lessons took place in the newly renovated schoolhouse for the first time.

The basic level was introduced in summer 2018. The basic level consists of three age groups: the former two years of kindergarten and first grade. The task as a «school god» resp. “Schul-Götti” is to accompany the respective children on excursions and to bring the children a present on their birthdays.
