The Schulenberg tunnel is a 195 meter long, former railway tunnel and today's cycle path tunnel in Hattingen in North Rhine-Westphalia .

history

The tunnel was built in 1883, in 1884 the Wuppertal-Wichlinghausen-Hattingen railway line , the so-called coal railway from Wuppertal to Hattingen , was opened. Passenger traffic was discontinued in 1979, and freight traffic in 1984.

On September 23, 2008, after the completion of the renovation work on the railway line that had begun in 1989, it was reopened for cycling. According to the original concept, it was supposed to remain closed at night, but the post of key officer was not filled.

As an important traffic connection, the tunnel can be used all year round and also at night. Exceptions to this have so far only been due to art campaigns or icicles forming in the tunnel (Easter 2013).

The tunnel is part of the 2008 new Von-Ruhr-zur-Ruhr-Radweg and the NRW football route .

The southeast entrance is on Bredenscheider Straße along the Sprockhöveler Bach . The northwest end is east of Grünstraße in Hattingen.
