The Sprockhöveler Bach is a left tributary of the lower Ruhr named after the town of Sprockhövel , which flows north and northwest over the urban area in Hattingen .
geography
course
The stream rises in the southwest of Haßlinghausen , at Halloh . Here he has to break through the hard sandstone banks that were mined near Weuste .
The brook has dug its way in a geological fault. The tributaries and Siepen buried in the soft clay layers feed the stream with their water.
The Obere Lauf was also previously named Wiggershauser Bach .
The stream meanders through the wide valley to the north and crosses under the former Bossel – Blankenstein railway . Here he feeds a couple of fish ponds. From here the stream runs parallel to the old Schee-Hattingen railway line at a suitable distance . To the north of the Kleine Windmühle colliery , it crosses the road from Sprockhövel to Schwelm and later turns west towards the center of Niedersprockhövel. Before reaching the settlement area, the brook runs through a flood protection system, which is intended to prevent flooding in the town center by limiting the flow rate and to direct the water to other floodplain areas. A large mill pond used to be a few meters away from this building. Passing the core of Sprockhövel, we continue west to Bredenscheid . But here a hard sandstone bank is pierced again. Then the bank turns to the east and flows around Hattingen. In Ludwigstal, it then disappears into the piping to pass under the area of the steelworks museum to Werkstrasse. Behind the former Henrichshütte , the stream ends today with a large passage in the Ruhr.
The lower course was formerly called Schierhöller Bach or Sünsbruch Bach .
Main hydrological strand
While the above course corresponds to the usual topographic maps, according to the water station with Sprockhöveler Bach only the upper and middle reaches of this creek (276942, 11.2 km) are designated, which are classified as tributaries of the Paasbach (27694, lower reaches 6.6 km long) becomes. Accordingly, the stream described here has two water body numbers.
Direct comparison of the two upper reaches at the confluence:
Surname | GKZ | length
[in km] |
EZG
[in km²] |
MQ
[in l / s] |
---|---|---|---|---|
Sprockhöveler Bach | 276944 | 11.3 | 13.65 | 256 |
Paasbach | 27694 | 7.8 | 9.40 | 176 |
The upper course called Sprockhöveler Bach has a different GKZ than its lower course, but has a larger mean discharge, a larger catchment area and is longer than the Paasbach, which has the same GKZ as the lower course. The upper course with the name Sprockhöveler Bach is thus the main hydrological branch of the Sprockhöveler Bach river system.

Mining
Some tributaries have dried up due to mining. Some dilapidated tunnels have taken over the function of drainage.
