With Bergisch-Märkisches Hügelland one is natural spatial unit (order number 337 1 .1) of the main unit via Bergisch-Sauerländisches lowlands called (atomic number 337).

It comprises the hilly country between the valleys of the Wupper , Schwelme and Ennepe in the south and the Ruhr in the north and east. In the west, the hill country merges into the Niederbergisches Land , which is largely combined in the natural area Niederbergische Höhenterrassen (order number 337 1 .0). The most famous landscape in the natural area is Elfringhauser Switzerland .

Cities and municipalities with a share of the hill country include Velbert , Essen (districts Byfang , Kupferdreh ), Wülfrath , Wuppertal (northern part), Sprockhövel , Gevelsberg (northern part), Hattingen (south of the city center), Wetter (Ruhr) (west of the Ruhr) , Witten (south / west of the Ruhr) and Hagen (north of the Ennepe / west of the Ruhr).

The hill country has elongated ridges and rounded peaks . The highest heights are reached in the southeast at 300 m. Accordingly, most of the hill country drains north into the Ruhr. Geologically, the hill country consists of heavily folded carbonic or Devonian greywacke , slate , sandstone , quartzite or limestone . The soils consist of sand-loamy weathering products with rock debris. They are shallow on the slopes and the valley floors have sandy and loamy soils.
