Schulenburg Castle (Badbergen)

The Schulenburg in Badbergen is a castle that has existed since the 14th century with a main building built around 1755. It is located in Badbergen in the district of Osnabrück in western Lower Saxony .

Origin of the noble estate

The Schulenburg was founded before 1300 by Baldwin von Varendorff , who is mentioned as its owner in 1292 and 1293. According to legend, there was a place called the "Holy Hall" near the castle, which served as a pagan temple. This was replaced by a chapel and the pagans were given compulsory education on the site, hence the name "Schulenburg". In 1379 Metteke von Varendorff, known as von der Schulenburg, sold the castle to Baldwin von Knehem. The last owner from the Knehem family, Baldwin von Knehem, who was married to Katharina von Grapendorf, sold the castle to Wilhelm von der Recke in 1561 . His widow Beleke von der Recke, née von Bödinghausen, finally sold the Schulenburg in 1579 to Hermann von Dincklage .

Schulenburg as the seat of the von Dincklage family

With the purchase of the Schulenburg by Hermann von Dincklage, it became the headquarters of the Protestant branch of the Dincklage family and remained in the family until it was sold in 1906. The Catholic branch of the family still lives in Gut Campe today , which is why the two existing branches of the Schulenburg and Campe families are now called. In the heyday of the estate, there were up to 30 separate farms. Around 1755, today's manor was built on the site of the old castle by Adam Levin von Dincklage. In 1830 Otto von Dincklage, who was married to Klementine von Reden , took over the estate. Otto, like the other male members of the sex, was raised to the baron class in 1844. The Dincklage were ardent supporters of the Kingdom of Hanover and so in 1862 King George V of Hanover visited the Schulenburg. Towards the end of the 19th century the estate got more and more into financial difficulties. In 1901, the last landlord to live in Schulenburg, Herbord Freiherr von Dincklage, died. His son Clemens Freiherr von Dincklage, who had studied law and started a civil service career, could no longer hold the estate and sold it in 1906 to Mrs. Alwine Weßling. Clemens Freiherr von Dincklage lived from then on in Berlin and Bromberg and, leaving behind four children, fell near Longwy in August 1914.

Schulenburg since 1906

After taking over the property, it was managed for a while, then served for some time as a retirement home and as a medicine depot for the Bundeswehr. It is now privately owned and managed again.
