The shoulderbuck ( Oxymirus cursor , syn .: Toxotus cursor ) is a longhorn beetle of the northern Palearctic .

description

The beetle grows to 16 to 30 mm. The corners of his shoulders stand out clearly. The pronotum has two bump-like elevations to the right and left of the center. The males are mostly completely black, while the females usually have brownish reddish antennae, partly equally colored legs and brownish reddish longitudinal stripes on the wing covers. The females in particular can also be quite yellow-brown. In between there are numerous color variations.

Occurrence

The shoulder buck is widespread in Europe, but is absent in the south. In addition, it colonizes northern Asia. It prefers higher mountain ranges and also reaches the subalpine zone.

Way of life

The larva develops in rotten wood of both coniferous and deciduous trees. It inhabits lying, windbreaking trunks as well as stumps, branches and roots. It thus contributes to the decomposition of dead wood and its transformation into humus . It pupates in the ground.

The beetle comes out from mid-May and lives until June. It occurs later at higher altitudes and can be found until August. The diurnal animals fly around on warm days, occasionally visit flowers and sit on old trunks.
