Canopy (construction)

In the vicinity of construction sites , protective roofs are used to protect sidewalks , roads and tracks from falling objects. On construction sites they are used for occupational safety and must span the walkways and workplaces of the staff if work is carried out above these areas at the same time. The trade association for the construction industry (BG BAU) prescribes in Germany where and in what form protective roofs must be erected.

Use and construction in Germany

BG BAU provides for two basic areas in which protective roofs must be erected if these danger areas cannot be cordoned off.

For traffic routes under scaffolding , a protective roof must be provided that protrudes over the scaffolding by at least 60 cm and is at least 1.50 m wide in total. Drop sides with a height of at least 60 cm must be attached all around. Additional protective nets with a maximum mesh size of 2 cm are attached directly below the workstations and usually catch falling objects.

When erecting “tower-like structures”, danger areas that are to be entered must be provided with protective roofs, which, in contrast to protective roofs on scaffolding, are subject to increased requirements. The roof structure consists of two crossed layers of planks, each 4 cm thick, and an insulation layer 10 cm thick between them. For this come z. B. Polystyrene foam panels are used. Due to the special design, objects that fall from a great height cannot break through the roof so easily.
