Schwab's Drug Store

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Schwab's Drug Store (Schwab's Pharmacy) on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood , California was a hangout for actors and filmmakers of old Hollywood from the 1930s to the 1950s. In film circles it was called the "headquarters". Typical for American drugstores of that time, ice cream, small dishes and drinks were offered here alongside the sale of medicines and other items at a counter.

One of Hollywood's legends has it that actress Lana Turner was discovered here, while other sources say the event took place in a café about a mile away.

At Schwab's, some important scenes in the film Boulevard der Dämmerung (original: Sunset Boulevard) by Billy Wilder take place in and in front of the famous drugstore. The exterior shots were shot at the original location, for the interior shots, Wilder had Schwab's interior reconstructed in the Paramount Studios true to the original.

The legendary Schwab's drugstore had to close on October 22, 1983. In 1988, the old building complex 8024 Sunset Boulevard was finally demolished and gave way to a shopping center and a multiplex cinema.
