The term splash water is an old term from rafting . It describes the water used to transport tree trunks on a river.

In order to be able to transport the felled wood from the forest, felled tree trunks were brought into a dammed lake near the logging area. As soon as enough water was dammed up, the dam was removed and the logs were washed into the next larger river on a tidal wave. There the trunks were then tied together to make rafts and taken to a point of sale along with the staff.

Splash water is also a term used in swimming pool technology and describes the water that passes over the edge of the pool and flows into the splash water tank .

In Switzerland , water drains are the operators of dams. referred to as splash water . These water drains can occur due to operation or malfunction. Planned or unplanned water drainage may occur. Most of the water drains are secured by the operator's water rights. Areas that are affected by splash water are to be marked with warning signs. These areas may be flooded by the power plant operator without warning. In Switzerland, around 500 streams and rivers below power plants are affected by splash water. Splashing water can lead to fatal accidents.
