Entrance to the passage

The Schwanenmarkt is a square in downtown Krefeld .

history

The square between Hochstrasse and Everstrasse was previously called Buttermarkt and was one of the historic marketplaces. In 1361 Krefeld received the market rights for a fair and a weekly cattle and vegetable market from Emperor Charles IV . This took place at today's Schwanenmarkt.

In the 19th century it was said that due to the strong industrial immigration "the old Krefeld around the church and the small market square, the Schwanenmarkt on the main street, the Hochstraße" could soon no longer grasp the number of immigrant citizens.

Swan fountain

Bronze figures of young swans from 1905 adorn a fountain in the middle of the square. They were made by Berlin sculptor August Gaul . The fountain itself was made from Franconian shell limestone by the Berlin court stone mason Schilling. The fountain was donated by Heinrich Müller-Brüderlin, owner of the then adjoining textile house Heinrich Müller Johannes Sohn . The fountain is popularly known as the duck fountain. The six animal figures were stolen in 2014 and replaced in 2015.
