A Schwartzkopff-Eckhardt steering frame (also Schwartzkopff-Eckhardt frame ) is a mechanical component to improve cornering, which is used in steam locomotives . It was named after the locomotive factory Berliner Maschinenbau-Actien-Gesellschaft formerly L. Schwartzkopff and its chief designer Friedrich Wilhelm Eckhardt .

The Schwartzkopff-Eckhardt steering frame is a further development of the Krauss-Helmholtz steering frame , whereby two coupling axles and the running axle of a vehicle are combined to form the steering frame. The running axle steers the second coupling axle via a long drawbar, which moves the first coupling axle via Beugniot levers . These steering racks were used in the 84 series .

The class 99.23-24 steam locomotives were given a modified version ex works or after conversion.

Functional scheme

In the diagram, the running axis is shown on the right and the two coupling axes on the left. The blue-violet drawbar connects the barrel axle with the left coupling axle. The drawbar is mounted with a pivot in the red-violet frame bar between the coupling axles and the running axle. Since the pivot point of the drawbar does not coincide with the pivot pin, the connection can be moved and is centered by springs. The left coupling axle is in turn connected to the middle coupling axle via the orange lever. The orange lever is connected to the frame via the red-violet frame bar between the coupling axles. This connection can also be moved laterally and is centered by springs. This means that the complete set of wheels can be moved sideways and is centered by springs. By carefully selecting the springs and the spring characteristics, the cornering forces are evenly distributed over the wheels and wear is minimized.

Cornering

Assuming that the direction of travel is to the right and the running axle is thus arranged in front of the coupling axles, when cornering to the right the running axle is deflected and rotated to the right. The tiller shown in purple is also deflected. This moves the rear coupling axle to the left and, via the springs, the locomotive frame to a smaller extent to the right. The middle coupling axle is also deflected to the right using the orange lever.
