Black-brown mountain sheep
The black-brown mountain sheep (also called Jura sheep or Elbe sheep ) is a Swiss breed of sheep .
ancestry
This breed goes back to ancient breeds such as the Frutigschaf , which was mentioned as early as the 14th century. It emerged from various local lands, such as the Elbe (yellow-brown) mountain sheep and the Roux de Bagnes . Racial unification did not emerge until the beginning of the 20th century. Consistent selection resulted in a precocious and very fertile breed of sheep. The breed was unified in 1941 under the term "Schwarzbraunes Bergschaf" and has been recognized as a herdbook breed in Switzerland since 1979 .
distribution
The black-brown mountain sheep can be found in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. In Austria it is called Juraschaf to avoid confusion with other breeds. A flock of 100 sheep migrated in 1977 with the Longo maï cooperative from French-speaking Switzerland to Carinthia and then spread to the other neighboring federal states.
