Black Wolf ( Loup Noir ) was a French comic series about the adventures of a fictional Indian in North America during the time of the Wild West , published from 1969 to 1980 by Editions de Vaillant, Paris. It was written by comic book writer Jean Ollivier and drawn by Roger Chevallier (pseudonym: Kline ). In Germany, a translation was published by Bastei-Verlag from 1975 to 1977.

Plot and characters

Black Wolf, the main character in the series, is an Indian. His father belongs to the Apache tribe , his mother is a Sioux . He himself does not belong to any of the tribes. With his horse Shinook and the tame wolf Topee , he experiences numerous adventures in the Wild West. Supporting characters in the series are Kleine Wolke ("Petit Nuage"), a young Sioux Indian, and the trapper Shorty , who assist the Black Wolf in some of the stories.

Publications

Over 160 Loup Noir stories were published in France from 1969 to 1980. The first was published in Pif Gadget , issue 2, by Editions de Vaillant (print run: 350,000 copies), the last in Pif Gadget, issue 591. Pif Gadget, on the concept of which the German comic magazine Yps was based, was a French comic magazine that was published weekly from 1969 to 1993. Reprints of the stories have been published since 2005. Initially, a single title was published by Pif Editions. Taupinambour has been trying to create a complete edition since 2008. Eight volumes had been published here by May 2013.

A German translation was published under the name Schwarzer Wolf in the years 1973 to 1977 by Bastei-Verlag. Initially, four stories were published in the first Bessy paperback series (in volumes 2 through 5). From 1975 the series got its own issue. A total of 68 four-color comic books were published here. In addition to the adventures of the Black Wolf (mostly approx. 20 pages long), each issue contained an episode of the Teddy Ted western series (mostly approx. 10 pages long) as an additional story .

Black Wolf (Loup Noir) is called one of the most famous comics by the French author Jean Ollivier. The ecological and humanistic orientation of the western series is emphasized.
