Schwedenschanze (Vlotho)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Schwedenschanze is located about 500 meters northwest of Vlotho Castle on the Amtshausberg , a spur-like offshoot of the Ebenöde , in the East Westphalian town of Vlotho in the Herford district in North Rhine-Westphalia . From the site, which is listed as a ground monument, well recognizable moats and ramparts have been preserved.

description

The Schwedenschanze in Vlotho
The Schwedenschanze in Vlotho

The complex wall and trench fortification of the Schwedenschanze consists of two smaller, connected earthworks . The probably older, south-lying part of the complex consists of an approx. 25 m × 21 m large plateau, which is enclosed by a U-shaped double trench with an earth wall. In the north-west of the plateau a slightly raised area of approx. 13 m × 9 m can be seen. The western part of the system borders on a natural steep slope and makes a surge superfluous there. In the north is the probably younger earthwork, which interrupts the outer trench of the older part. It consists of a stepped platform measuring approx. 40 m × 20 m, which is surrounded by a trench with an outer wall on three sides, while the north side remains unprotected.

interpretation

Since the Vlothoer Schwedenschanze has not yet been archaeologically researched, the function and age of the facility are unclear. There are suspicions that the plant was created in the Thirty Years or Seven Years War . Likewise, the facility could have served to defend Vlotho Castle, as a north-western flank protection. A construction of the plant by Sweden can be excluded. The name Schwedenschanze is a common, albeit misleading, popular name, as it is used quite often for facilities whose origin is not exactly known.
