Svenskt teckenspråk , colloquially just teckenspråk , is the native name for the nationalSwedish sign languageofdeafpeople in Sweden.

Svenskt teckenspråk is not an officially recognized minority language according to the Swedish parliamentary resolution of 1981 . This takes account of the fact that although svenskt teckenspråk is an independent sign language with its own grammar that differs from the spoken language and a special national Swedish expression, it does not receive the same rights to protection and promotion as official minority languages.

Svenskt teckenspråk is not to be confused with tecknad svenska ("Signed Swedish"), which only represents the Swedish spoken language and its grammatical sequence with one character for each individual word. Since deaf people in Sweden (as in many other countries alike) were often unable to grow up with the spoken language, 1: 1 signed Swedish language is difficult to understand.
