Swedish twin registry

The Swedish Twin Registry (STR) is the largest twin registry in the world. The state register counts over 140,000 living and deceased twin pairs and is part of a European register with 600,000 twins (as of 2008).

Twin registers are the basis of twin research .

Story and goal

The Swedish twin registry is administered by the Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics of the Karolinska Institute . It was founded in the early 1960s by Professors Lars Friberg and Rune Cederlöf with the aim of studying the effects of smoking on our health. Her research was one of the first to show that smokers are more likely to develop lung cancer than non-smokers . It is only slightly older than the Danish twin register, which was founded in 1954 .

The database consists of several birth cohorts, i.e. twins who were born in a certain period of time. The address directory is updated monthly, the cancer and death directory annually.
