The Schwedter Tor was part of the medieval city fortifications of Angermünde , a town in the Uckermark district in the state of Brandenburg .

history

In the Middle Ages Angermünde had a city fortification with a surrounding city wall made of field stones , which protected the city against attackers. The Schwedt gate was in the east of the city and secured the trade route to Schwedt / Oder .

The building also consisted of carefully layered reading stones that formed a main gate and a front gate. Both sides were connected by walls. Until 1746 its name was Hohes Tor . The gate passage was around 3.7 meters wide and around 4.2 meters high. At the end of the 18th century, the city fortifications and the gates lost their protective significance. With the increasing volume of traffic, the passage turned out to be too narrow, as vehicles occasionally got stuck in the gate. The city therefore had it demolished in 1845. In 1856 she erected two neo-Gothic gateposts in place of the gate , which were decorated with a ball. These were renovated in 1893 and finally demolished in 1916.

To the east of the gate is a sculpture by the Angermünder artist Christian Uhlig in the Kaisergarten . The commissioned work of the city consists of laser-cut steel , which was then powder-coated and decorated with car paint. It measures around 2.5 meters by 3 meters and was created in 2002.
