history

Reminder of the 550th pig market

The pig market was first mentioned in a document on August 24, 1442. In a letter to Gerhard von Jülich-Berg , who was also Count von Ravensberg , the bailiff from Bevessen asked for an opinion on a physical argument that had taken place at the actual cattle market. The origin of the market lies in the parish fair of the Bartholomäuskirche . Accordingly, it was traditionally held on the Sunday after the feast day of St. Bartholomew (August 24th), but moved to the following Monday parallel to the actual consecration feast. In the course of time, however, the market character was completely lost. In the 19th century it was only a fair. The name still reminds of the original meaning.

From 1895, the pig market moved from its close proximity to the church to the neighboring streets and to the market square. In the 20th century it was relocated to Gleisdreieck in the south of Brackwede. Since 2012 - still at the end of August - it has been taking place again in the center of the village and on the market square of the Bielefeld district under the leadership of the district administration. Features of the pig market are typical rides and stalls, a medieval market and artistic performances. There will also be a (porcelain) piggy raffle. In memory of the origins of the market, piglets were once raffled off. Until the 1970s there were even no school days on this date. For the 550th pig market in 1992, a pig memorial was erected on the main road.
