Schweizer , also in the older spelling Schweitzer , was an Austrian measure of volume that was of tax law importance in felt production. According to the special toll tariff of March 31, 1701, the so-called burned-out warehouse was measured and customs cleared with this measure .

Until the appearance of the silk hat, hat makers were responsible for the entire production of felt, including coats and jackets, shoes and boots, hats, blankets, shawls and technical felts. During felt production, there were about 4,000 hat makers in Austria, certain substances such as mercury and compounds and soaps (wet milling) were to be removed from the felt with tartaric acid / tartar from the storage .

The gelation can be dried either by pressing or by distillation . One hectolitre of wine produces three to five kilograms of pulpy storage. A dry matter of 350 to 500 grams can be produced from this.
