Swiss pear is the trade name for wood of the pear tree as well as the Elsbeerbaums and Sorbus domestica . It is a valuable and, in perfect condition, expensive wood that can be used for carpentry , woodturning and carving . Long and knot-free trunks that can be processed into veneer are particularly valuable . The light wood of the pear and service tree develops a very beautiful, warm yellow-reddish color after steaming, which is very popular in interior design and for furniture. Since the wood is very dense, almost pore-free and also hard, very nice, warm surfaces can be achieved on the wood with little effort.

The name "Swiss pear tree" comes from the fact that in the past a large part of the wood came from cider pears grown in Switzerland . However, due to the decline in pear cider consumption over the past few decades, this proportion is falling.

The wood of the service tree is also marketed under its actual name and then tends to be more expensive. However, since these tree species are rather rare and ecologically valuable, so little wood is produced that often no market of their own can develop.
