The Organization of Swiss Milk Producers (SMP) founded in 1999 goes back to the Central Association of Swiss Milk Producers (ZVSM) founded in 1907. As a national umbrella organization , the SMP, together with its regional member organizations, represents the interests of Swiss milk producers .

history

aims

The task of the organization is to create the most favorable political and economic framework conditions possible for milk producers in a demanding agricultural and foreign trade policy environment.

Organization of Swiss milk producers

The 19,568 (2018) milk producers in Switzerland are united through eleven regional milk producer organizations in the Swiss milk producer organization SMP. These eleven regional producer organizations form the institutional link between the umbrella organization Swiss milk producers SMP and the individual milk producers. The presidents and managing directors of the member organizations are a link to the milk producers in the regions. On the one hand, the representatives of the SMP member organizations represent the interests of the regions in the SMP; on the other hand, the representatives are also responsible for implementing the SMP resolutions in their regional organizations. The Swiss Milk Producers Organization (SMP) has six bodies, the composition, rights and obligations of which are set out in the Articles of Association. The highest body is the assembly of delegates, which elects and oversees the board. Among other things, this is responsible for the strategic association management and delegates the execution of certain tasks to the board committee and the management. The external auditor is responsible for checking the bookkeeping. As a further statutory body, the SMP has standing commissions that are used by the board to process specific tasks. At the moment there is the Cheese Milk Commission and the Marketing Expert Committee.

Organizational structure of the Swiss milk producers

Basic marketing

The SMP operates basic marketing for Swiss milk and milk products under the name Swissmilk . The SMP states that it is committed to the sale and processing of as much Swiss milk as possible into products with high added value. To this end, it organizes advertising campaigns and is present at trade fairs, sporting events and open-air cinemas and music festivals.

The basic marketing should represent a common self-help of the producers and pursue goals that are in the interest of the dairy farmers. In this way, it should make a contribution to securing the dairy farmers' income.

The goals of milk marketing are:

  1. To present a positive image of milk and dairy products and in particular to emphasize the value of Swiss origin.
  2. Explain health significance.
  3. Using recipes to point out the possible uses in the kitchen.

Industry standard sustainable Swiss milk

The industry standard sustainable milk, also known as the "green carpet", was introduced in 2019 as the new milk production standard for Swiss milk. It is an instrument to clearly distinguish Swiss milk and milk products from foreign ones. The new standard is based on the regulations and guidelines of the milk industry organization and its requirements go beyond the minimum legal requirements. On September 1, 2019, the industry standard was introduced on dairy milk. The associated label is called "swissmilk green". International examples of sustainable production standards for milk are listed under the web links.

Market observation for market transparency

The SMP undertakes market observation , carries out market analyzes and creates reports. The publication of a monthly Swiss milk price monitoring system and a monthly market report should contribute to market transparency . Milk producers can see which milk buyer pays how much for the dairy milk and what milk price is being realized for the different types of cheese. This service should also show how much money is effectively being received by the producers.

Further price publications in the Swiss milk market

In addition to the Swiss milk producers, the Federal Office for Agriculture also publishes monthly reports on the milk price. These are based on different calculation and survey bases. For its part, the milk industry organization publishes target prices according to segments of milk processing.

numbers and facts

In Switzerland, almost 19 568 (2018) milk producers with 522 723 dairy cows (number of dairy cows for sales milk production; 2018) produce 3.45 million tonnes (2018) of milk for processing in dairies and cheese factories. On average, a dairy farm cultivates 26.8 hectares (2018) of land, keeps 26.7 cows and sells 170,676 kilograms of milk. The milk volume increased by 0.6 percent compared to 2017, and the number of farms fell by 3.2 percent. There are major differences between the geographic regions of Switzerland, between valley and mountain areas and between the various production directions. The larger milk production companies are located in the Swiss plateau from Geneva to Thurgau. This means that more than half of the dairy farms in the valley area produce. In the mountain area it is less than 50%, the farm areas are on average smaller than in the valley and they keep fewer cows. This also results in a smaller amount of milk produced. In summer there are also summer areas in the Alps for dairy cows. Regarding production directions, 32.6% of the milk volume comes from cows that are fed without silage . This special production method is a necessary prerequisite for the production of Swiss raw milk cheese specialties such as Le Gruyère AOP , Emmentaler AOP, Tête de Moine AOP, Appenzeller , raw milk Tilsiter , Swiss alpine cheese , Raclette du Valais AOP, Etivaz AOP or Sbrinz AOP.

All the figures mentioned in the previous section come from the 2018 annual report of Swiss milk producers.

The value chain for Swiss milk production is an important factor in the local economy. Upstream and downstream areas are the source of income for many employees in Switzerland.
