The Schweizerische Nagelfabrik is a factory for the production of wire nails in Winterthur and is the last remaining nail factory in Switzerland . The factory is located in the Grüze district and is right next to the Winterthur-Grüze train station . There is a museum with five historic nailing machines from the early days, which are listed by the federal government as a cultural asset of national importance .
Regular production
The strength of the nail factory lies in its proximity to the customer, since, unlike foreign mass producers, it is the only remaining nail factory in Switzerland that can respond quickly and individually to requests. The factory also has a wide range of over 220 different nails. The main pillars of the nail factory are the standard range under the name “Swiss pens” and commissioned work.
Museum operation
The five vertical beating machines from the founding time of the nail factory are still driven with transmission belts. In 1999 they were supposed to be retired, but we succeeded in preventing this. In 2001 the historical machine ensemble was classified as an outstanding witness of industrial culture and placed under monument protection. It could remain in the original machine room and was under the direction of the industrial archaeologist Dr. Hans-Peter Bärtschi renovated. A servitut (right of use) guarantees the preservation of the historical equipment and machines until 2030. The inbahn association is responsible for the show and organizes public and private tours.
