The association promotes cooperation among the further education institutions and awakens the public understanding of the importance of further education. With its political commitment, the SVEB contributes to improving the framework conditions for continuing education. He interferes in debates and takes a position on all important questions of further training policy. For this purpose, the SVEB prepares position papers, reports and statements on official consultations. At the same time, the SVEB participates in expert commissions and bodies. The most important project in the field of education policy is the Continuing Education Act, which came into force on January 1, 2017. In 2009, the SVEB submitted an expert draft to the federal government. The six educational policy principles of the SVEB are: Good framework conditions for further education, professionalism and quality in further education, further education for everyone, networking of all further education actors, equal opportunities in further education and public presence in further education.

The association is involved in numerous national and international projects in the areas of professionalization and quality (e.g. fide - qualification of language course leaders in the field of integration), promoting basic skills of adults and fighting illiteracy (e.g. with the GO - promoting basic skills of adults), and in raising awareness (e.g. learning festival).
