The Swiss Science Council SWR was founded on March 26, 1965. From 2000 to 2013 he was called the Swiss Science and Technology Council SWTR, from 2014 to 2017 the Swiss Science and Innovation Council SWIR . Since 2018 it has used the original name when it was founded.

The legal form is that of an extra-parliamentary commission, the legal basis are in particular Articles 54 and 55 of the Federal Act on the Promotion of Research and Innovation (RIPA).

A council with 15 members (professors from different disciplines) is attached to the president. The office is headed by Claudia Acklin, 6 people work as scientific advisors, 2 in the information service and 2 in administration at SWR.

tasks

The SWR advises the federal government on all issues relating to science, higher education, research and innovation policy in Switzerland. The aim of his work is the “continuous optimization of the framework conditions for the prosperous development of the Swiss education, research and innovation landscape”. He regularly publishes reports and studies on current science policy issues.

It issues statements on individual projects or problems in the education, research and innovation area (ERI) on behalf of the Federal Council or on its own initiative and also acts as an evaluation committee. The information service compiles information on ERI topics in Switzerland and abroad.

The work program for 2016 to 2019 includes overarching topics (e.g. sustainable university and university landscape), political topics, as well as evaluations, appraisals and impact assessments.
