Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth

The Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth ( Latin : Congregatio Sororum Sacrae Familiae de Nazareth , English : Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth , abbreviation: CSFN ) are a religious order of the Roman Catholic Church . The congregation was founded in Rome in 1875 by Blessed Franciszka Siedliska (1842–1902). The religious order has 1214 members with perpetual and temporary profession (as of 2016). Then there are the novices and postulants .

history

The Polish sister Franciszka Siedliska ( religious name Mary of Jesus, the Good Shepherd ) initiated in 1873 through a request to Pope Pius IX. the establishment of a congregation of sisters. Two years later, in 1875, she founded the "Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth" in Rome .

The first branch outside of Europe was established in the United States in 1885 . The sisters arrived in Chicago on July 4, 1885 . There they looked after a parish in which mainly immigrants from Italy lived. The sisters took on tasks in pastoral care for the immigrants and in schools and set up a health service.

organization

The Generalate has its seat in Rome . The General Council is composed as follows: the General Superior , the Deputy General Superior, the General Secretary , the Treasurer and two other members.

The sisters are active in 153 locations worldwide. Order provinces exist in Poland ( Krakow and Warsaw ), in Belarus, for Western Europe (England, France and Italy), in Australia, in the Philippines and in the USA. There are also missions in Israel, Kazakhstan and Ghana.

Martyrs

On March 5, 2000, Pope John Paul II beatified eleven sisters of the Order who were shot by the Secret State Police on August 1, 1943 .
