Sister house

The sister house in Kirdorf , a district of Bad Homburg vor der Höhe, is a listed building.

Kirdorf was a Catholic island in the predominantly Protestant-Calvinist Landgraviate of Hessen-Homburg . In addition to the Taunus Cathedral , the nurses' house testifies to this .

It was built in 1873/74 with donations and on the initiative of Kirdorf for the cooperative of the Sisters of Divine Providence in Mainz. The inauguration took place on June 24, 1874 by Bishop Wilhelm Emmanuel von Ketteler .

Building description

The two-story building, visible from afar, has a gable roof and eight-sided roof turrets with painted acoustic arcades. The three-zone front faces the village at the eaves and is divided into pilaster strips and cornices and gabled centrally. The windows and the eaves cornice are made in Gothic style. An ice cellar was laid out deep in the "Engelsberg" under the building and was rented out. Later a chapel was added to the side. This chapel with a five-sided choir is also built in the style of romantic classicism.

use

The building was the home of the sisters and their outpatient nursing station. In 1908 the separate kindergarten was opened. In addition, a laundry room was built which is now used as a library. There is a cast iron water pump in the courtyard.

In 1972 the use as a sister house was discontinued due to a lack of children and the house was converted into a community center.

The building has been declared a cultural monument for reasons of local, religious and architectural history .

Refurbishment from 2016

A complete renovation of the building complex will begin in 2016. The total cost is around € 2 million. Maintaining the 45 windows is particularly complex. These are preserved in the original and are individually expanded and refurbished.
