Wolfensberg swimming pool

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Wolfensberg swimming pool is an outdoor swimming pool in Winterthur - Veltheim ( Rosenberg district ) and the second swimming pool opened in Winterthur. The origin of the system was the first sunbathing facility in Switzerland with sunbathing .

history

In 1900, the first sunbathing facility in Switzerland was opened on a leased area of a former quarry by the local section of the Association for the Elevation of Public Health (now Vitaswiss) - at that time still clearly gender-separated . In 1910, a neighboring area was acquired and the sunbathing facility was moved there and a Pünten facility opened above it , which still exists today. While the Pünten were quite profitable, the sunbathing facility, which was now supplemented by a family department, remained in economic difficulties. The reopening of the "Non-Alcoholic Restaurant zum Wolfensberg" in July 1928 did nothing to change this situation - it was closed in 1945 in favor of a kiosk.

In the autumn of 1932, after the restaurant was built in the middle of the global economic crisis , the board decided to build a swimming pool based on plans by the renowned architects Rittmeyer & Furrer. The construction was then delayed by four years due to the water supply issue, the association first wanted to use surface water from the Wolfensberg , the Ohringer Eisweiher and the Walcheweier , but could not raise the necessary money with the unsafe water supply. It was only when the decision was made to use its own groundwater supply that the Wolfensberg swimming pool could be realized by the successor office of Furrer & Merkelbach. After a construction stop for financial reasons, the second Winterthur swimming pool was opened on August 23, 1936. The new swimming pool was a success and soon generated higher visitor numbers than the sun bath.

In the 1950s, municipal loans were necessary to renovate the pool, and in 1963 the city of Winterthur finally bought the pool for CHF 568,258  after the sovereign approved a loan. From January 1965 the operation was carried out by the swimming pool cooperative Wolfensberg. The new cooperative then had to tackle the complete renovation with the city, for which the population of Winterthur approved a loan of 1.1 million francs in 1969. In 1971 the completely renovated bath was finally opened. In 1997 a simple renovation took place after the population of Veltheim had previously spoken out against more extensive plans such as the construction of a water slide, a vortex canal or a water heater. In the years 2006 to 2008 renovation was carried out for CHF 3.2 million. In 2010, the swimming pool cooperative was briefly criticized for using Grander water .

architecture

The swimming pool is on a concrete structure and was built in the style of New Building by the architects Rittmeyer / Furrer and the successor company Furrer / Merkelbach . The swimming pool is still largely in its original state.
