The Steyr swimming school , the oldest outdoor swimming pool for workers of Europe, was originally developed by director Josef Werndl (businessman and arms manufacturer, Steyr Daimler Puch AG ) for factory workers of Steyr-Werke in 1874 in the moat as Josef Werndl'sche swimming & bathhouse rebuilt and exists in its current form with the name "swimming school" since 1950. history

Historical price list from 1884

Earlier, in 1863, Josef Werndl had built the original swimming school for his workers on Direktionsstrasse, which was closed in 1873 due to a factory being built on the site. In 1874, Werndl created a new bathing establishment to replace it, for which the master carpenter and later machine manufacturer Josef Huber provided the plan. The originally U-shaped facility, of which only the basin remains, consisted of an entrance pavilion, a restaurant building and an elongated cabin wing with a "salon" in the middle. The architectural design of the timber frame building with brick lining was something between spa and industrial buildings. The institution was dedicated to both swimming and ice skating. The swimming season was from April up to and including September, and the ice skating season from October up to and including March. In May 1950 the swimming school was reopened by Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG after the collapsed wall along the Steyr had been renewed, the children's paddling pool had been equipped with filter systems and the swimming pools had been completely redesigned. In 1961 the bathroom was modernized. The entrance building on the Schwimmschulstrasse disappeared.

The renovation work on Europe's oldest outdoor swimming pool was completed in 2013. In the course of this modernization, the cabin wing (2002), the box and sanitary building, the entrance area including the cash desk (2004-06), collecting cabins with terrace (2008), the children's pool with slide (2010) and a new buffet with terrace, which directly is located on the Steyr river and the large sports pool (2012) extensively renovated.

The swimming school street, named after the pool, leads from Wehrgraben- to Schweizergasse

In 1999 Frank Stronach sold the loss-making bathing establishment for Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG to the newly founded "Friends of the Swimming School" for an Austrian schilling . The founder of the association is former mayor of the city of Steyr Hermann Leithenmayr , who also acted as chairman. After his death in 2010, the former Vice Mayor Gerhard Bremm took over. The management has the former Stadtwerke-Steyr boss a. D. Dkfm. Ing.Karl Zeilinger.

The city of Steyr supports the association of "Friends of the swimming school" significantly, so that the Steyr swimming school is preserved. So-called living subsidies are approved annually to cover new investments during ongoing operations. The wage accounting and the smooth running of the swimming school are carried out free of charge by the Steyr magistrate.

In the course of the renovation work, the swimming school received further prizes, honors and recognitions. Among other things, the 2015 State Prize, awarded to the Association of Friends of the Swimming School in Steyr by the Federal Ministry for Science, Research & Economy, the Upper Austrian Timber Construction Prize 2007 and the Region's Architecture Prize 2009. The 2015 builder award went to the Luger & Maul team of architects, who are responsible for project planning.

The swimming school may be converted into a historic natural pool in the future.
