Scleropages inscriptus ( inscriptus = "labeled") is a predatory fish from the family of the osteoglossids (Osteoglossidae). The species was only described in 2012and occurs in the Burmese part of the Malay Peninsula , in the Tanintharyi division . The exact distribution area (rivers Tananthayi and / or Tenasserim) is unknown, as the type specimens come from ornamental fish exporters from Rangoon and Meik. Scleropages inscriptus is the only known species of bone stimulant from Myanmar. Thai aquarists had been familiar with the colorfully attractive fish for about ten years.

features

Scleropages inscriptus is very similar in its morphology , the dimensions, as well as the fins and scales formula to the Asiatic forked beard ( Scleropages formosus ), whose distribution area adjoins to the east. Scleropages inscriptus is therefore placed in the subgenus Delsmania , which includes all Southeast Asian Scleropages species.

Scleropages inscriptus differs from all other Southeast Asian and Australian bones in the form of complex, colored, labyrinthine or wave-like markings on the scales on the sides of the body, the gill cover and around the eyes. These characteristic patterns occur only in large, fully grown specimens and are absent in small individuals. Like fingerprints in humans, these patterns are different for each large fish. Similar colored scale patterns are not known in any other bony fish.
