history

In the 18th century, the Earl of Hopetoun ran mines in Leadhills. The Scots Mining Company House was built between 1834 and 1836 for James Stirling , the operations manager. The Scottish architect William Adam may have been involved in the planning. Adam had a close relationship with the earl and his name appears on various invoices from the construction period. If it was originally a free-standing building, the south wing was added as early as 1737 and the north wing in 1740.
