Scott's View

Scott's View is a lookout point on Bemersyde Hill , near Bemersyde in the Scottish Borders . From this point you can see the valley of the river Tweed .

It is named after Sir Walter Scott , who is said to have stopped here so regularly that his horses stopped at this point even without command. Legend has it that they did the same when they passed this point after his death as part of the funeral procession. In fact, this stop is due to an accident.

Some accident, it was observed, had caused the hearse to halt for several minutes on the summit of the hill at Bemerside - exactly where a prospect of remarkable richness opens, and where Sir Walter had always been accustomed to rein up his horse.
