Course of the game

As with most amateur sports, there is no uniform set of rules for scoutball, but only one basic thing in common: Every player must wear a scarf, often a scarf , in the waistband of the pants on the buttocks so that it can be easily pulled out by other players.

Two teams compete against each other in scoutball. The size of the teams can vary greatly, from 5 to over 20 players per team. With more players, the game is usually too confusing. The length of the playing time can also be freely selected, mostly in the range of 10 to 20 minutes.

There is some kind of gate at both ends of the pitch. Some rules provide for classic goals of various sizes, from smaller than a hockey goal to a normal handball goal , others have end zones such as American football or posts or touchdown zones behind which the playing field continues. Sometimes there is a kind of goal area around the posts that cannot be entered.

The aim is to get the ball in or on the goal, although throwing is often not allowed. The winner is whoever scores the most points in the end.

In order to distinguish the game from other, similar sports and to make it more skill-oriented, each player wears the above mentioned cloth. If a player from the other team succeeds in tearing the handkerchief from the ball carrier, he has to sit out a penalty time (approximately two minutes) on the edge of the field and the team receives a free throw from the place where the handkerchief was lost. In the event that the towel is pulled out before the ball is accepted, there is the rule in some tribes that the player fouled in this way may carry out his next action without a towel, so to speak as a punishment for the opponent who has illegally stolen his towel . In other variants of the game, the ball must be passed immediately in this case.
