scoyo is a company based in Hamburg and provider of learning content on the Internet for students from 1st to 7th grade with a web-based learning platform for different age groups and school subjects, mobile apps are also part of this e-learning portfolio . With more than 4000 learning stories, tests and exercises, the company offers most of the school-relevant content in Germany in the online area.

history

The portal was founded in April 2007 as a wholly owned subsidiary of the Bertelsmann media group , initially under the name study interactive . The name was changed to scoyo in August 2007. Bertelsmann invested around 40 million euros in company and product development from 2007 to 2009, and the online portal was expanded for the international market. When it failed to meet its economic targets in 2009, Bertelsmann sold the company on April 1, 2010 to the children's television broadcaster Super RTL . Since then, scoyo has concentrated exclusively on business development in German-speaking countries. Managing director is Daniel Bialecki.

Media didactic concept

scoyo was designed in 2007 in cooperation with educators and didactics from the Leuphana University of Lüneburg and the University of Duisburg-Essen and tested by teachers. The school book publisher Cornelsen was involved in the didactic conception and coordination of the tasks with the respective curricula of the 16 German federal states. The focus should be on having fun while learning and the learning material should be conveyed to the children in a playful way in the form of a story-based framework. In addition to the problem-oriented introduction to the individual learning stories, the main focus is on everyday relevance. For this purpose, target group-oriented learning worlds with cartoon characters were developed for the individual grades and the teaching topics were integrated into adventure stories. The cartoon director Gerhard Hahn designed some of the learning worlds and characters. The learning progress control takes place via a point system.

The fun of going through the adventures should motivate the students to learn independently and have a positive effect on the learning success. A study by the University of Duisburg-Essen commissioned by scoyo in 2009 shows that the participating students had an average learning increase of 64 percent after just one week.

Areas of application and content

The online learning portal has been developed for various areas of application: it enables pupils to study independently at home, and the platform is also used for group work or individual tasks in school lessons and in afternoon care. The content is aimed at students in grades 1 to 7 in the subjects math, German, English, physics, biology, chemistry and art.

In the spring of 2013, the company entered into a cooperation with the Hamburg public library , so that the platform has been accessible via the library's homepage ever since. In addition, the PCs in the bookhouses offer the opportunity to try out scoyo under expert guidance.

All content is available online. Parents conclude a contract for their children about the type of use, in which the duration can be determined individually.
