The Italian word Scuderia means “stable”, but is primarily a synonym for “racing stable”, as is the case with Scuderia Ferrari . However, the Scuderia Colonia was not a team in the sense of the constructors' ratings of motorsport, as it did not have its own fleet of vehicles, mechanics, etc. It saw itself as an interest group of drivers in order to organize common motorsport activities. In addition, it should create contacts to the industry and provide the youngsters in motorsport with a basis through the resulting support.

The Scuderia Colonia was founded on January 13, 1960 in the Villa Palais du Rhin in Cologne, which has been used by the ADAC as a club and event house since 1956 . In addition to 21 other sports and racing drivers, the founders were primarily the lignite entrepreneur Friedrich Victor Rolff, who was also a successful racing driver, and the Formula 1 racing driver Wolfgang Graf Berghe von Trips .

Scuderia Colonia drivers took part in numerous car races. Drivers were also registered as a team for the Grand Prix races for the Formula 1 World Championship in 1961 . Michael May and Wolfgang Seidel were most recently registered in a Lotus 18 racing car for the tragic Grand Prix of Italy on September 10, 1961 on the Monza circuit , for which Seidel was able to qualify, but was eliminated in the first lap with engine failure. The world championship leader "Taffy" von Trips started as a works driver of Scuderia Ferrari - but as usual with the coat of arms of his Scuderia Colonia on the helmet - and was killed in a devastating accident on the second lap of the race. 15 spectators died with him and 60 others were injured, some seriously.

The Scuderia Colonia, now based in Cologne-Lind , is now primarily dedicated to long-distance races, historic motorsport and the promotion of young talent. As the organizer, SC has been organizing the “Scuderia Colonia Classic” as a sporty outing for vintage vehicles since 2000.
