Seán Ó Neachtain

Seán Ó Neachtain (born May 22, 1947 in Galway ) is an Irish politician ( Fianna Fáil ).

Ó Neachtain received his Bachelor of Arts in 1969 . From 1969 to 1980 he worked as a teacher. His political career began in Galway County Council , of which he was a member from 1991 to 2002. He was also a member of the West Regional Authority from 1992 to 2002, a member of the Border, Midland and Western Regional Assembly from 2000 to 2002 , and a member of the Údarás na Gaeltachta from 1979 to 1991 and 1999 . From 1991 to 1996 Ó Neachtain was chairman of Údarás na Gaeltachta .

In 2002, Ó Neachtain took over from his party colleague Pat Gallagher in the European Parliament . As a member of the European Parliament , he belongs to the Union for a Europe of Nations group. After he was successfully re-elected in 2004, Ó Neachtain decided not to run again for health reasons. At his instigation, Irish became the official language of the European Union in 2005 .
