Seán Brosnan

Seán Brosnan (born December 21, 1916 , † April 18, 1979 ) was an Irish politician of the Fianna Fáil , who was a member of the House of Commons between 1969 and 1973 and again from 1974 to 1979 ( Dáil Éireann ) and from 1973 to 1974 a member of the Senate ( Seanad Éireann ) was. He was also a member of the European Parliament between 1977 and 1979 .

Life

After attending school, Brosnan studied law and subsequently worked as a barrister . He ran for the Fianna Fáil in the elections of April 7, 1965 in the constituency of Cork North East for the first time unsuccessfully for a seat in the House of Commons. In the subsequent elections on June 18, 1969 , he was elected a member of the Dáil Éireann in the constituency of Cork North East , but lost that seat in the next election on February 28, 1973 . Instead, he became a member of the Seanad Éireann on June 1, 1973, where he represented the so-called Administrative Panel , the interest group for public administration and social institutions.

Brosnan was, however, already in the following year when the death of Michael Ahern necessary election (by-election) in the constituency Cork North East re-elected member of the House. In this election he was able to clearly prevail against his four competitors with 19,928 votes (49.36 percent). In addition, in December 1977 he was elected by the Dáil and the Seanad as one of the ten Irish representatives in the European Parliament .

Most recently, Brosnan was again a member of the Dáil Éireann in the elections of June 16, 1977 , and with 8840 votes (18.66 percent) occupied the best place of the four elected out of nine candidates. After his death on April 18, 1979, there was a by-election on November 7, 1979. In this, Myra Barry from Fine Gael was able to prevail with 15,939 votes (38.68 percent) against Brosnan's son John Brosnan from Fianna Fáil (14,961 votes, 36.31 percent) and two other opponents.
