Sean Steele

Sean Steele (born August 26, 1963 ) is an independent Irish journalist.

Steele had been an activist for the independence of East Timor in Ireland , which had been occupied by Indonesia since 1975 . In August 1999, in the run-up to the independence referendum in East Timor , he accompanied student activists as a reporter accredited by the United Nations. He came under fire from Indonesian soldiers and militias who wanted to break up a protest rally in Viqueque , but was brought to safety on a UN mission. Two Timorese were shot. Steele also witnessed further attacks on the East Timorese people. Like other journalists, he was evacuated from Dili to Australia on September 6th .

In 2015 Steele received the Ordem de Timor-Leste . His companion Oran Doyle accepted the medal because Steele was too ill at this point.
