Sebastián Piana (born November 26, 1903 in Buenos Aires , † July 18, 1994 ) was an Argentine tango composer, arranger and pianist and music teacher.

biography

Piana was born in the Barrio Almagro of Buenos Aires to Italian immigrants. His father was a hairdresser and an enthusiastic hobby musician who played the piano, guitar and mandolin and performed with a tango group in cafés. From 1910 he had violin lessons from his uncle Pedro Bertolero . Two years later he began studying piano with Angel D'Agostino at the Instituto Musical Odeón . In 1920 he received a degree as a piano teacher. After that he was a student of Ernesto Drangosch until his death.

From 1917 Piana worked as a silent film and theater pianist, participated in variety shows and orchestral performances. In 1920 he composed his first tangos Sabor popular , La tapera and El hombre orquesta . With José González Castillo he composed the tango Sobre el pucho , with which he took second place in a 1922 Tango Cagarettes competition. The composition Silbando , also in collaboration with José González Castillo and his son Cátulo Castillo , was performed in 1923 by Azucena Maizani in the Revue Poker de Ases at the Teatro San Martín .

With Pedro Maffia he composed the tango Arco iris , with which he won second place in the Max Glücksmann competition, and which Francisco Canaro was recorded with. In 1929 he composed Milonga clásica , a tango for orchestra, other successful titles were created in collaboration with Homero Manzi , such as Viejo ciego , Milonga sentimental , Milonga del 900 , Milonga triste , Juan Manuel , Milonga de los Fortines , Pena mulata , Milonga de Puente Alsina , Canción por la niña muerta , El pescante and De barro .

Piana also composed music for the films Vidalita , Arrabalera , Derecho viejo and He nacido en Buenos Aires as well as the incidental music for La boina blanca by Carlos Goicoechea and Rogelio Cordone . He was a professor at the Conservatorio Municipal Manuel de Falla and taught choral singing in elementary schools. In addition to tangos, he also composed a Misa de Gloria for three-part choir and Escenas de Ballet .
