The six-spotted ram ( Zygaena filipendulae ), also known as blood droplets or acorns , is a butterfly ( moth ) from the ram family (Zygaenidae). The species is also known as the six-spot red ram.

features

The six-spot ram is characterized by six red spots on the front wings, whereby the two front spots can merge. The hind wings are colored intensely red. This conspicuous color with the black and red colored wings signals predators that the species is poisonous ( warning color ). The moths reach a wingspan of about 38 millimeters. The caterpillars are about 22 millimeters long and are characterized by a black head capsule. They are compact and taper sharply at both ends. The green-yellowish caterpillar body has a double row of black spots on the dorsal side, which are accompanied by yellow markings on both sides. Occasionally the black markings are so pronounced that the whole body appears black.

Occurrence

The six-spotted ram is found in large parts of Europe. It can live at an altitude of over 3,500 meters and is diurnal.

habitat

Meadows, lowlands, cliffs, fallow land and forest edges are part of the habitat of the six-spot ram.

Way of life

The females lay eggs on the forage plants from July to August. The caterpillar forage plants include horn clover ( Lotus corniculatus ) and red vetch ( Coronilla ). The caterpillars feed into autumn, overwinter and are fully grown in June the following year. Some of the caterpillars can hibernate a second time. The pupation takes place in an elongated, yellowish white web of stems and withered blades of grass. The moths hatch from July to August.

Flight and caterpillar time

The six-spotted ram flies in one generation from July to August. The caterpillars can be seen in September. They overwinter and continue their development in June of the following year.
