Second party logistics

Second party logistics service providers are logistics service providers who belong to the second area of ​​the logistics industry (second party logistics). They specialize in taking on classic logistical tasks, so-called transport , handling and storage services (TUL services).

Historical development

In the 1980s, in the course of internationalization and the emergence of new management concepts, in particular lean management , the trend towards outsourcing logistics services began. Since companies wanted to concentrate on their core competencies , TUL services were increasingly outsourced to logistics service providers. This area is known as Second Party Logistics (2PL).

Business justification

The low specificity of TUL services compared to the core competencies of a company was the main reason for outsourcing. The latter was unavoidable in order to improve corporate processes in terms of lean management. This provides for a company that is as "lean" as possible, which concentrates on the most important tasks (core competencies). Other business management tasks, such as B. the logistics services should be outsourced.

By outsourcing the TUL services, it was possible to achieve cost reductions, avoid investments outside of the core competence and improve the service .

Examples

2PL service providers are e.g. B. Forwarders , shipping companies , shippers, storage and handling companies as well as providers of courier, express and parcel services ( CEP services ). Such companies are network service providers who offer several individual logistical services, some combined, and have their own assets , such as B. trucks , cargo ships or warehouses .
