Sedgefield is a constituency for the House of Commons in County Durham . The constituency was created in 1983 and covers much of Sedgefield and Newton Aycliffe . He sends a representative to parliament.

The constituency existed between 1918 and 1974, but was then abolished. At this time members of the Conservative Party and the Labor Party alternated as representatives. Sedgefield was represented in the House of Commons by Joseph Slater, Baron Slater, among others . Since the formation in the course of the general election in 1983 , Sedgefield has been continuously represented by members of the Labor Party.

In the 1983 elections, Tony Blair , who later became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, won the seat in the House of Commons between 1997 and 2007. After he resigned in 2007, a by-election was due. This won Phil Wilson .

The constituency had an unemployment rate of 4.7% in April 2013 . This value was thus higher than the national average of 3.8%.

In September 2015, the Japanese company Hitachi opened a factory in Newton Aycliffe , which made a massive contribution to the creation of new jobs in the constituency.
