Lake house

The Seehaus in Widdern in the Heilbronn district is a residential area with a historic inn from the early 18th century. It got its name from two former lakes nearby, which were drained before 1834. The building has been owned by the city of Widdern since 1750 and served as an inn until the 1990s.

history

The Seehaus is located about two kilometers southwest of Widdern in an approximately 24 hectare clearing island in the Harthäuser Forest on Hohen Strasse , a historic long-distance path. The clearing site possibly goes back to a place Degernbach , which is documented in the 13th century, but in the 16th century was only described as a meadow ground, i.e. it had become deserted . The Hohe Strasse had suffered badly from the wars of the 17th century and was restored around 1711 on the orders of the princely, because they wanted to continue to benefit from long-distance traffic. The barons of Zyllnhardt , who owned Ganerbe shares in Aries, owned a lake on both sides of the street . Shortly before 1719, the Zyllnhardt built the Seehaus inn with them . The barons of Ellrichshausen also built an inn on Hohen Strasse at that time, about three kilometers to the west.

Apparently high income was expected from the Seehaus, since in 1749 the lease of the Seehaus, Chr. Seeger from Jagsthausen, was asked to pay a rent of 50 guilders, which was unusually high for the time. Seeger not only wanted to entertain foreign wagoners, but also to hold dance events for the residents of the area, which, however, was forbidden to him by the rulers.

In 1750 the lake house and other parts of the Zyllnhardt property came to Württemberg , which it sold to the city of Widdern for 680 guilders that same year. Between 1749 and 1834 the lakes were drained and people switched from fish to grass.

The Seehaus remained a leased farm estate with an inn until the 1970s. After the land consolidation, the fields were parceled out. The inn operation continued until the 1990s. The city of Widdern later put the building up for sale. In 2010 the local THW secured the dilapidated roof structure.
