In the Seelensdorfer Forest

The Seelensdorfer Forst is an extensive contiguous forest area in the north of the city of Havelsee around the municipality of Seelensdorf . It is largely owned by the Brandenburg Cathedral Monastery .

The forest

The vast majority of the areas in the Seelensdorf Forest are planted with pines , 1,400 hectares of which are in the cathedral's own forest. The Domstiftsforstamt cultivates around 1,800 hectares of forest. In addition to pines, beech , oak , larch , birch and Douglas fir are grown on around 80 hectares each . The pine forests are mostly single-tier, pure stands, so-called age-class forests. The background to this is that in the first two decades after the Second World War, extensive clear cuts took place, which were increased again on a monoculture basis with the stipulation of maximum timber production. In recent years, however, a forestry restructuring of the forests around Seelensdorf can be observed. Monocultures are increasingly being abandoned and the development of more natural deciduous mixed and deciduous forests is being promoted instead.

Sawmill in the Seelensdorfer Forest

The Brandenburg Cathedral Foundation operates its own sawmill in the Seelensdorfer Forest. This produces around 4,500 cubic meters of staple wood, 450 cubic meters of sawn timber, 190 cubic meters of firewood, 2,291 cubic meters of chips and 1,400 cubic meters of wood chips every year. The village of Seelensdorf, after which the forest area is named, is located in the middle of the forest. In this there is a fire watchtower , which enables the timely detection of possible forest fires.

Forest cemetery

Today the Brandenburg Cathedral Foundation maintains a forest cemetery in the Seelensdorfer Forest. The cemetery has an area of around 20 hectares and is mainly overgrown with sessile oaks that are over a hundred years old . There are also individual birches and pines. The forest cemetery is purely an urn grave cemetery. The name tags are attached to the respective tree. Since it is a forest cemetery, grave maintenance, grave decorations and, because of the danger of forest fires, candles in particular are not allowed.

Protected areas

The Seelensdorfer forest lies completely within the Westhavelland Nature Park and conservation area Westhavelland. In Seelensdorf, a pedunculate oak is under special protection as a natural monument and in the southeast of the forest some areas are part of the FFH area Weißes Fenn and Dünenheide, including the White Fenn Marzahne . To the north, the Seelensdorfer Forest borders on the Pritzerber Laake , which is a designated nature reserve, among other things. The adjacent floodplains in the southwest were also placed under protection as a nature reserve.
